When Do Chihuahuas Stop Growing?
As a toy breed, Chihuahuas grow up fast. Most reach their full height by about 6 to 8 months old, then keep filling out with a little muscle and weight until roughly 9 to 12 months. How big do Chihuahuas get?
Not very! They’re one of the smallest breeds. The breed standard puts an adult Chihuahua at no more than about 6 pounds, and they typically stand around 5–8 inches tall at the shoulder. “Teacup” Chihuahuas aren’t a separate or official type - just especially small individuals, and extreme smallness can come with health concerns, so be cautious of that marketing term.
What affects their final size
- Genetics / parents’ size - the best predictor of an adult Chihuahua’s size.
- Nutrition - a quality puppy diet supports healthy growth (but overfeeding causes fat, not a bigger dog).
- Health - illness or parasites early on can affect growth.
A rough guide some owners use is that a small-breed puppy’s weight at around 6 weeks, doubled a couple of times, hints at adult weight - but your vet’s estimate is far more reliable.
A note on feeding tiny puppies
Very small puppies like Chihuahuas can be prone to low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) if they go too long without eating, so they often need small, frequent meals early on.
