Can Dogs Eat Mango?

Short answer

Yes, dogs can eat mango in moderation. The ripe flesh is safe and rich in fibre and vitamins A, B6, C and E, but you must always remove the skin and the pit first - the pit is a choking and blockage hazard and contains a trace of cyanide. Mango is high in sugar, so keep it to a few small pieces as an occasional treat, and go easy with diabetic or overweight dogs.

Yes - dogs can eat ripe mango in moderation. The soft flesh is a sweet, nutritious treat that most dogs love. The important part is the prep: the skin and especially the pit have to go before you offer any.

Is mango good for dogs?

In small amounts, mango flesh provides:

  • Fibre to support digestion
  • Vitamins A, B6, C and E
  • A high water content, which is refreshing on a hot day

It’s a treat, not a dietary staple - a balanced dog food already covers the essentials.

Always remove the pit and skin

  • The pit is the real danger. It’s a serious choking hazard and can cause an intestinal blockage if swallowed, and it contains a trace of cyanide. Never let your dog gnaw on a mango stone - if they swallow one, call your vet.
  • Remove the skin. Mango skin is tough, hard to digest, and can irritate some dogs’ stomachs, so peel it off first.
  • Cut into small pieces so it’s easy to chew and swallow, especially for little dogs.

Watch the sugar

Mango is high in natural sugar, so a little goes a long way. Too much can cause an upset stomach or diarrhoea, and the sugar adds up. Keep mango (and all treats) to no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories - a few small cubes for most dogs.

Which dogs should be careful?

  • Diabetic or overweight dogs - the sugar is a concern, so check with your vet first.
  • Dogs with sensitive stomachs - introduce a tiny piece and watch for upset before offering more.

Fresh ripe mango is best; skip dried mango (much more concentrated sugar) and any canned or sweetened mango in syrup.
