Are Carrots Good for Dogs?

Yes - carrots are a genuinely good treat for dogs. They’re safe, low in calories, and packed with useful nutrients, which makes them one of the better everyday snacks and training rewards you can offer.

Why carrots are good for dogs

• Beta-carotene / vitamin A - supports eye health, skin and coat
• Fibre - helps digestion
• Potassium and antioxidants
• Low in calories - great for dogs watching their weight, and a healthier swap for fatty treats

Raw or cooked?

Both work, with slightly different perks:

• Raw carrots give a satisfying crunch, and the chewing can help scrape plaque and support dental health. Many dogs love a whole raw carrot to gnaw - just size it appropriately.
• Cooked carrots (steamed, boiled or baked, plain) are softer, easier to digest, and actually release more of some nutrients.

Cold or frozen carrot pieces can also soothe a teething puppy’s gums - though note that hard frozen carrots can be tough on adult teeth, so use judgement with size and hardness.

Serve them safely

• Wash them and cut into bite-sized pieces - large chunks and whole carrots can be a choking or blockage risk, especially for small dogs and gulpers.
• Keep them plain - no butter, salt, oil or seasoning.
• Introduce gradually; too much fibre at once can cause gas or loose stools.

How much is right?

Carrots are healthy, but they’re still a treat - keep them and all other treats to no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. A few pieces a day is plenty for most dogs. Because carrots contain natural sugar, diabetic dogs should have them only with your vet’s okay.
