Bluey the Australian Cattle Dog — verified to have lived 29 years and 5 months — remains the oldest verified dog in recorded history. He lived on a farm in Victoria, Australia, with his owner Les Hall, and worked herding sheep and cattle for most of his life.

Bluey's lifespan was approximately twice the typical Australian Cattle Dog lifespan. What drove this outlier status isn't known with certainty — but the pattern of farm-working dogs with active lifestyles and varied diets appearing among longevity record holders (Bramble, a vegan Border Collie who lived to 25; Maggie, a 30-year-old Australian Kelpie mix whose age was not officially verified) suggests that combination of genetics, lifestyle, and diet matters. No single breed-type has dominated the record books — suggesting the upper tail of the lifespan distribution in dogs is influenced by individual genetic lottery as much as breed.

The 2023 record-holder for a living dog, Bobi (a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo, 31 years old), had his record revoked in 2024 by Guinness World Records following documentation review that found inconsistencies in his age verification — returning the verified record to Bluey.
